BILL NUMBER:A9151 TITLE OF BILL: An act to amend the general municipal law, in relation to the regulation of taxicabs and limousines in Suffolk county PURPOSE OR GENERAL IDEA OF BILL: This legislation would allow the County of Suffolk to adopt ordinances regulating the registration of taxicabs and limousines. SUMMARY OF SPECIFIC PROVISIONS: Subdivision 1 of section 181 of the general municipal law, as amended by chapter 430 of the laws of 2003 is amended to allow Suffolk County to adopt local ordinances regulating the registration of taxicabs and limousines. JUSTIFICATION: Chapter 549 of the laws of 2006 requires any taxi or limousine company to be licensed with the City of New York, in order to pre-arrange pick-ups and drop-offs in New York City. Licensing requires that companies meet strict criteria, including a ten fleet minimum. Current law puts smaller limousine and taxi companies in neighboring counties at a disadvantage, as they are unable to schedule pre-arranged trips to New York City. This legislation would allow Suffolk County to set its own standards and practices with regard to the registration of taxicabs and limousines.
