BILL NUMBER:S854A

TITLE OF BILL:
An act
to amend the highway law, in relation to designating a portion of the
state highway system in the town of Ellicott as the "Lucille Ball-Desi
Arnaz Memorial Bridge"

PURPOSE:
To recognize the historic significance of Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz
to the Jamestown area by naming the bridge on Interstate 86 which
crosses over North Main Street in the Town of Ellicott as the
"Lucille Ball-Desi Arnaz Memorial Bridge."

SUMMARY OF PROVISIONS:
Section 1. Adds a new subdivision (z) to Section 343 of the highway
law designating a portion of interstate route eighty-six as the
"Lucille Ball-Desi Arnaz Memorial Bridge."

Section 2. Provides that the Commissioner of the Department of
Transportation shall provide for the installation and maintenance of
adequate signage reflecting the ceremonial designation of this bridge
as the "Lucille Ball-Desi Arnaz Memorial Bridge."

JUSTIFICATION:
The year 2011 marked the centenary of the birth of Lucille Ball, best
known as the star of the television show "I Love Lucy," in Jamestown,
New York, in 1911. In light of this occasion and in recognition of
the enormous popularity and influence she enjoyed throughout her long
career, naming this bridge near Jamestown in honor of her, and "I
Love Lucy" co-star Desi Arnaz, will distinguish this area as having
held a significant role in her life, while helping to promote the
area as a popular tourist destination.

LEGISLATIVE HISTORY:
2010: S.7116/A.10380 Referred to Transportation

FISCAL IMPLICATIONS:

EFFECTIVE DATE:
This act shall take effect immediately.
