BILL NUMBER:S5599B

TITLE OF BILL: An act to amend the highway law, in relation to
designating a portion of the state highway system in the hamlet of
West Babylon, county of Suffolk, as the "New York City Police
Department Detective Peter Figoski Memorial Bridge"

PURPOSE: This bill memorializes the bridge on Route 109 which crosses
the Sunrise Highway in West Babylon as the "New York City Police
Department Detective Peter Figoski Memorial Bridge."

SUMMARY OF PROVISIONS: Section 1 of this bill adds a new section
343-aa to the Highway Law, which states that a portion of the state
highway system will be designated as the "New York City Police
Department Detective Peter Figoski Memorial Bridge."

Section 2 states that the commissioner of transportation shall provide
further installation and maintenance of adequate signing of the state
highway system as designated by section one of this act.

Section 3 sets an immediate effective date.

JUSTIFICATION: NYPD Detective Peter Figoski was a 22 year veteran of
the New York City Police Department, serving in the 75th Precinct in
Brooklyn. On December 12, 2011, Officer Figoski and his partner
answered a call for assistance at a robbery in Cypress Hills, near the
Queens border. Officer Figoski was fatally shot by one of the
assailants as he blocked the suspects only exit.

Officer Figoski was posthumously promoted to Detective by the New York
City Police Department and was awarded the department's Medal of
Honor, the highest award that can be given to a city police officer.
He leaves behind his grieving family including his parents and his
four daughters who remain in the Babylon area.

This bridge will memorialize the life of Detective Peter Figoski and
will serve as a reminder to his family, friends and those in the
Babylon community of the ultimate sacrifice made by Detective Figoski.

LEGISLATIVE HISTORY: None.

FISCAL IMPLICATIONS: Minimal.

EFFECTIVE DATE: This act shall take effect immediately.
