BILL NUMBER:S6841 TITLE OF BILL: An act to amend the highway law, in relation to designating certain portions of the state highway system in the counties of Monroe and Tioga PURPOSE: This bill will help honor police officers killed in the line of duty by allowing for roadside memorial signs to be installed on state highways. SUMMARY PROVISIONS: Section 1 amends the highway law by adding a new section 344-c JUSTIFICATION: In many areas throughout the country, memorial signs are dedicated to honor fallen officers and their families at the location where they died. The state Department of Transportation has traditionally restricted signage on state roads to notices for drivers and other personnel such as law enforcement and snowplow drivers. This bill would change this tradition and would allow New York to begin to memorialize our fallen officers with signage on certain portions of state highways. Specifically, this bill would memorialize the following fallen officers: Deputy Simon J. Bermingham; Deputy Joseph G. Munz; Deputy William Marshall; Deputy James I. Conheady; Deputy John Pullano; Undersheriff George A. Conway; Deputy Frank Dombrowski; and Sergeant Robert Skeleton, Jr.
