MOURNING the death of Sergeant Barry Weissman,
committed law enforcement officer, family man and
devoted member of his community

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to convey its
grateful appreciation and heartfelt regret in recognition of the loss of
a courageous and hardworking police officer who dedicated his purposeful
life and career in faithful service to both his family and the residents
of New York State; and

WHEREAS, It is with profound sadness that this Legislative Body
records the passing of Sergeant Barry Weissman, committed law
enforcement officer, family man, and devoted member of his community,
who died on Saturday, January 23, 2021, at the age of 70, due to
complications related to the novel coronavirus; and

WHEREAS, Born on May 20, 1950, in the Bronx, New York, Barry
Weissman was the beloved son of Sam and Katie (Leiter) Weissman; and

WHEREAS, Barry Weissman was a graduate of James Monroe High School's
class of 1968; his love of the law and attention to detail made him well
suited to a career in law enforcement; and

WHEREAS, On March 2, 1974, Barry Weissman married the love of his
life, Maria Morales; his marriage to Maria introduced him to the Latin
culture; he learned to speak Spanish and enjoyed dancing the Maranga and
other Latin style dances; and

WHEREAS, Barry Weissman began his career with the Town of Wallkill
Police Department as a part-time police officer in February of 1982;
eight years later, he was sworn in as both Code Enforcement Officer and
Violations Clerk; and

WHEREAS, This extraordinary officer continued to climb the ranks and
worked in many capacities until he was proudly sworn to the esteemed
rank of Sergeant on June 29, 2012; and

WHEREAS, Sergeant Barry Weissman spent more than three decades with
the Town of Wallkill Police Department, serving with dedication,
loyalty, and compassion; he devoted his purposeful life and career to
serve and protect; and

WHEREAS, Throughout his illustrious career, Sergeant Barry Weissman
distinguished himself in his profession and by his sincere dedication
and substantial contribution to the welfare of his community; he was
truly committed to making his town a safe place for all; and

WHEREAS, Predeceased by his parents, Barry Weissman is survived by
his loving wife Maria; his son, Jason (Rosalie); his daughter, Michele;
his grandson, Isaiah; two cousins, Douglas and Audrey; and Maria's
siblings, as well as their nieces, nephews and numerous friends; and

WHEREAS, Armed with a humanistic spirit and imbued with a sense of
compassion, Sergeant Barry Weissman leaves behind a legacy which will
long endure the passage of time and will remain as a comforting memory
to all he served and befriended; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
mourn the death of Sergeant Barry Weissman, committed law enforcement
officer, family man and devoted member of his community and be it
further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to the family of Sergeant Barry Weissman.
