COMMEMORATING the 200th Anniversary of the Erie
County Sheriff's Office

WHEREAS, The quality of life in New York State is largely reflective
of the commitment and dedication demonstrated by members of the agencies
which serve to protect, preserve and maintain public order; and

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize and
honor those distinguished citizens who devote their life's work and
purpose to public service, contributing to the care and welfare of the
citizens of the State of New York; and

WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
commemorate the 200th Anniversary of the Erie County Sheriff's Office;
and

WHEREAS, The Office of the Sheriff, Erie County, New York,
celebrates its Bicentennial in the year of 2021; it is fitting to
recognize the Office of the Sheriff on the occasion of this special
milestone and to applaud its distinguished history; and

WHEREAS, Officially created on April 2, 1821, upon the adoption of
the New York State Constitution, by the New York State Legislature, and
the appointment of John G. Camp as Sheriff for the new County of Erie;
and

WHEREAS, Today, the Office is a diverse organization providing
assistance in Divisions of Police Services, Jail Management,
Correctional Health, Civil Enforcement, Special Operations, Professional
Standards, and Administration, each containing Units of personnel
providing expertise and important services, as well as employment for
approximately 945 sworn and civilian personnel; and

WHEREAS, Within the Erie County Sheriff's Office, the Sheriff Police
Services, Jail Management, and Civil Enforcement Divisions have received
professional accreditation by the New York State Sheriff's Association;
and

WHEREAS, Furthermore, Erie County Sheriff's Office has faced the
challenges of a modern law enforcement agency with the creation of
specialized units of Fire Investigation, Traffic Control and Accident
Investigations, SWAT (Special Weapons and Tactics), Bomb, Weapons and
Ordnance, K9, Underwater Recovery Team, Marine and Snowmobile, Aviation
(Helicopter), Human Trafficking, Crisis Negotiations, Narcotics, Medical
Response, and Unmanned Aircraft System; and

WHEREAS, The Office of the Sheriff has diligently dedicated its
resources to community policing through its Domestic Violence Unit,
Explorers Program for Youth, Child Identification Initiative, Car Safety
Seat Checks, Citizen's Academy for the public and clergy, participation
in charity, civic, community and educational activities; and

WHEREAS, The Erie County Sheriff's Office has been honored to have
been served by five Deputies who have made the ultimate sacrifice while
faithfully executing their responsibilities toward Erie County: William
Dillemuth, William Dils, Robert Insalaco, Frederick Kaesser and Joseph
Wachowiak; and

WHEREAS, For over two centuries, the Erie County Sheriff's Office,
has remained true to its mission of keeping the peace by providing
public safety and law enforcement services to the citizens throughout
the county; and

WHEREAS, The tradition of altruistic public service, heroism and
leadership embodied by the Erie County Sheriff's Office is of such
magnitude as to be worthy of special, statewide recognition; now,
therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 200th Anniversary of the Erie County Sheriff's Office;
and be it further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to Timothy B. Howard, Sheriff, Erie County Sheriff's Office.
