LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION memorializing Governor Andrew M. Cuomo to
proclaim Tuesday, March 15, 2011, as Single Mother's Day in the State of
New York

WHEREAS, It is the intent of this Legislative Body to memorialize Gover-
nor Andrew M. Cuomo to proclaim Tuesday, March 15, 2011, as Single Moth-
er's Day in the State of New York; and
WHEREAS, Approximately 84% of custodial parents are mothers, in
contrast to 16% of fathers; mothers who are custodial parents consist of
the following: 45% are currently divorced or separated; 34.2% have never
been married; 19% are married; and 1.7% are widowed; and
WHEREAS, Almost 79.5% of custodial single mothers are gainfully
employed where 49.8% work full-time and 29.7% work part-time; and
WHEREAS, True heroes are the single mothers that selflessly and at
tremendous cost to themselves, sacrifice everything to provide for their
children; and
WHEREAS, With little or no support, these single mothers work two and
three jobs, pay the bills, clean their homes, design creative ways to
stretch their meager supply of food, teach their children right from
wrong, and protect their youngsters from violence; and
WHEREAS, Knowing that there are millions of single mothers in the
United States struggling to do the very best they can, such a day of
recognition would honor those who long ago gave up on help, hope and
empathy; and
WHEREAS, For these true American heroes; it would be an exceptional
moment if they knew that their silent, unseen and unrelenting battles
with the unfairness of life were at least acknowledged and honored by
this great Empire State; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
memorialize Governor Andrew M. Cuomo to proclaim Tuesday, March 15,
2011, as Single Mother's Day in the State of New York; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to The Honorable Andrew M. Cuomo, Governor of the State of New
York.
