LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Stephen W. Schlissel Esq. upon the occa-
sion of his designation for special recognition by the Nassau County Bar
Association on May 11, 2013

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to acknowledge
outstanding individuals whose professional lives, personal endeavors and
community service are an example and inspiration to their colleagues,
friends, and family; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor
Stephen W. Schlissel Esq. upon the occasion of his designation for
special recognition by the Nassau County Bar Association to be cele-
brated at its 114th Annual Dinner Dance on Saturday, May 11, 2013, at
the Marriott Hotel, Uniondale, Long Island; and
WHEREAS, A Nassau County native, Stephen W. Schlissel is a graduate of
the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, and Harvard Law
School, cum laude; and
WHEREAS, For 34 years, Stephen W. Schlissel taught as an adjunct
professor at Brooklyn Law School, and for 20 years, he was an adjunct
professor at Hofstra Law School; and
WHEREAS, Stephen W. Schlissel is a founding and the managing member of
Schlissel Ostrow Karabatos, PLLC of Garden City, Long Island, New York;
he is also a co-founder of P.E.A.C.E. (Parent Education And Custody
Effectiveness) which established a program for educating parents and
children in divorce situations; and
WHEREAS, He served as co-Chair of a National Joint Task Force of the
American Bar Association's Family Law Section, and the Association of
Family and Conciliatory Courts, which had the goal of establishing stan-
dards and models for Parent Education Programs in other localities; and
WHEREAS, Stephen W. Schlissel was chosen as one of the top attorneys
in the United States in all editions of THE BEST LAWYERS IN AMERICA
(Woodward/Whitel), only one of less than 250 family law attorneys to be
so chosen; and
WHEREAS, Continuously designated a "Super Lawyer", in 2010, Stephen W.
Schlissel was selected as one of the top 100 Super Lawyers, out of
65,000, in the New York City Metropolitan area; and
WHEREAS, He served for more than seven years as a member of the Griev-
ance Committee for the 10th Judicial District, and was appointed to the
Committee on Character and Fitness; and
WHEREAS, Stephen W. Schlissel is also a member of the Board of Gover-
nors of the New York State Attorney-Client Fee Dispute Resolution
Program, a member of the joint First and Second Department Mental Health
Professional Review Committee, and the Financial Chair of the Nassau
County Bar Association's WE CARE Fund; and
WHEREAS, Furthermore, Stephen W. Schlissel is a co-Chair of the Nassau
County Judicial Committee on Women in the Courts; he has lectured
throughout the country and authored and co-authored many articles,
thored with The Honorable Bernard S. Meyer, then of the New York State
Court of Appeals, published in the NEW YORK STATE BAR JOURNAL; and
WHEREAS, Stephen W. Schlissel is the original author of a two-volume
WHEREAS, One of the outstanding trial lawyers in New York State,
Stephen W. Schlissel has also established new law on appeal in a number
of cases; he was the first attorney in New York State to obtain an Order
prohibiting a mother from smoking in the presence of her children; and

WHEREAS, Stephen W. Schlissel is a member of numerous professional
associations, some of which include: the American Academy of Matrimonial
Lawyers, and the American, New York State and Nassau County Bar Associ-
ations, as well as the New York State Family Law Section; and
WHEREAS, Moreover, Stephen W. Schlissel is a Diplomate of the American
College of Family Trial Lawyers, membership in which is limited to only
100 attorneys across America; and
WHEREAS, Throughout the entire period of his professional and communi-
ty service, a period of constructive involvement, Stephen W. Schlissel
has stood constant in dignity, good grace and humor; and
WHEREAS, With him throughout have been his wife of almost 53 years,
Joan, and their three daughters and three sons-in-law, as well as seven
grandchildren, all of whom feel privileged to be a part of his life and
rejoice in his achievements; and
WHEREAS, Rare indeed is the impressive dedication shown by an individ-
ual for the benefit of others which Stephen W. Schlissel has displayed
throughout his life; and
WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body that those who
enhance the quality of life in their community and have shown a long and
sustained commitment to the maintenance of high standards in their
profession, certainly have earned the recognition and applause of all
the citizens of this great Empire State; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Stephen W. Schlissel Esq. upon the occasion of his designation for
special recognition by the Nassau County Bar Association; and be it
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Stephen W. Schlissel Esq.
