LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Carver Community Center, Inc. upon the
occasion of celebrating its 75th Anniversary

WHEREAS, The State of New York takes great pride in recognizing signif-
icant milestones in the distinguished histories of its esteemed enti-
ties; and
WHEREAS, Carver Community Center, Inc., in Schenectady, will celebrate
its 75th Anniversary at the Terrace at the Waters Edge Light House on
May 3, 2013; and
WHEREAS, The Center was formed in 1938, as the George Washington
Carver Welfare League; and
WHEREAS, According to its mission statement, Carver Community Center
responds to the varied service needs of individuals and families living
in the City and County of Schenectady, and continues to develop new
initiatives to meet the ever-changing needs of the community; and
WHEREAS, League member Mrs. Lee Toland encouraged the Schenectady
Public School System to sponsor certain activities that later became
part of the Center's program; and
WHEREAS, The League incorporated under the name Carver Community
Center of Schenectady, Inc. in 1951; and
WHEREAS, The Center moved to its current location at 700 Craig Street
in 1970; and
WHEREAS, In 1982, Carver Community Health Center was formed; it was
later renamed Schenectady Family Health Center and is now known as Home-
town Health; and
WHEREAS, A Foster Care Prevention Unit was added to the Family Support
Service program in 1990; and
WHEREAS, In 1993, Carver was appointed lead agency in the planning and
development of the Neighborhood-Based Alliance in the City of Schenecta-
dy; and
WHEREAS, This project developed a Strategic Neighborhood Action Plan
through the coordinated efforts of public and private agencies, organ-
izations, churches, and residents of the Hamilton Hill and Vale communi-
ties; the plan created community-level decision-making bodies to assess
needs, develop plans, and guide community revitalization efforts; and
WHEREAS, Carver began a tutorial services program for long-term
suspended students of the Schenectady City School District in 1999; and
WHEREAS, An outreach program was added in 2000 to assist the most
needy members of the community; and
WHEREAS, In 2001, the Youth Services Program was expanded to include a
Gang Prevention initiative; and
WHEREAS, Guido Iovinella was appointed Executive Director in 2009; and
WHEREAS, In November of that year, the Early Childhood Education
Program reopened with the help of donations from the Wright, Carleelan,
and Troy Foundations; and
WHEREAS, In 2010, Carver entered a partnership with Northeast Parent
and Child Center which created a Resource Center at the Craig Street
site to provide counseling and support to adolescents; and
WHEREAS, Carver Community Center, Inc. has a long and distinguished
history of providing valuable services to the community; now, therefore,
be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Carver Community Center, Inc. upon the occasion of celebrating its
75th Anniversary, and to compliment the Center and its affiliate
programs on its valuable contribution to the community; and be it

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Guido Iovinella, Executive Director of the Carver Community
Center, Inc.
