LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION congratulating Bishop Robert J. Coyle upon the
occasion of his ordination as an Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese for
the Military Services, on April 25, 2013

WHEREAS, The character and richness of religious and community life in
this noble Empire State is nourished and fulfilled through the faithful
concern and selfless devotion of those who would commit their energies
and purpose to the ministry of others; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to bring full recog-
nition and just tribute to those individuals who distinguish themselves
and the ministry through their unremitting commitment and preeminence of
service; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to congratulate Bishop
Robert J. Coyle upon the occasion of his ordination as an Auxiliary
Bishop of the Archdiocese for the Military Services; this august occa-
sion took place in the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate
Conception in Washington, DC, on April 25, 2013; and
WHEREAS, As one of four auxiliaries, Bishop Robert J. Coyle will serve
the Archdiocese for the Military Services as Episcopal Vicar for the
Eastern Half of the United States; and
WHEREAS, The Archdiocese for the Military Services provides the full
range of pastoral ministries and spiritual services to Catholics in the
United States Armed Forces, serving more than 220 installations in 29
countries, patients in 153 Veterans Administration Medical Centers, and
federal employees serving outside the boundaries of the United States in
134 countries; and
WHEREAS, Bishop Robert J. Coyle was born in Brooklyn in 1964, to
Robert and Kathryn Coyle; and
WHEREAS, The product of a life-long Catholic education, he received a
Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics from Fordham University in 1986, a
Master of Divinity degree in 1991 and a Master of Arts degree in Theolo-
gy in 1998 from Immaculate Conception Seminary; he was ordained to the
priesthood in 1991; and
WHEREAS, Bishop Robert J. Coyle was commissioned an ensign in the
United States Navy on June 3, 1988 where he served with honor and
distinction for 24.5 years on Active and Reserve Duty, before his
retirement from the Naval Reserve on January 1, 2013, with the rank of
Commander; and
WHEREAS, A decorated Navy chaplain, Bishop Robert J. Coyle was a
command chaplain aboard the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower, an aircraft carri-
er based out of Norfolk, Virginia; he also served on the USS Harry
Truman on deployment to the Persian Gulf, as well as command chaplain at
the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy; and
WHEREAS, While assigned to the USS Eisenhower, Bishop Robert J. Coyle
was named a chaplain of honor with the title of Monsignor by Pope Bened-
ict XVI in 2008 in recognition of his outstanding service caring for the
spiritual needs of Catholics and others of all faiths in the United
States Navy; and
WHEREAS, In August of 2009, Bishop Robert J. Coyle began his ministry
as Pastor of Corpus Christi Parish in Mineola, New York, serving his
diverse community of parishioners with zeal and vigor until his ordina-
tion; and
WHEREAS, Bishop Robert J. Coyle has brought to his ministry a profound
spirit of charity and compassion, acting from vision and enlightenment
in conducting his administrative and spiritual duties, while always
displaying the highest standards of personal and professional integrity
and dedication; and

WHEREAS, This distinguished man of God has always given enlightenment,
guidance and wisdom to the many entrusted to his care and has adminis-
tered abundantly and unstintingly to the spiritual and corporal needs of
all; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when a person
of such noble aims and accomplishments is brought to our attention it is
appropriate to publicly and jubilantly proclaim and commend that indi-
vidual for the edification of others; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
congratulate Bishop Robert J. Coyle upon the occasion of his ordination
as an Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese for the Military Services,
noting his unremitting and compassionate faith and his exemplary service
to God, humanity, and his community, and extending to him the heartfelt
best wishes of this Legislative Body for a future of purposeful success
and well-being; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Bishop Robert J. Coyle.
