LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION mourning the death of John M. Janos, distin-
guished Firefighter and devoted member of his community

WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to pay tribute to
citizens of the State of New York whose lifework and civic endeavor
served to enhance the quality of life in their communities and the great
State of New York; and
WHEREAS, John M. Janos of Binghamton, New York, died on April 6, 2013,
at the age of 57, while on duty with the Binghamton Fire Department; and
WHEREAS, John M. Janos distinguished himself in his profession and by
his sincere dedication and substantial contribution to the welfare of
his community; and
WHEREAS, A graduate of Binghamton Central High School, Class of 1973,
and Broome Community College, John. M. Janos was a Firefighter for the
City of Binghamton Fire Department with 24 years of distinguished
service; and
WHEREAS, He was a Paramedic and a Hazmat Specialist, and past Presi-
dent of the Binghamton Firefighters Union Local 729; in addition, he was
one of the key people responsible for the creation of the Binghamton
9/11 Memorial, and a Board member of the Retired Professional Fire
Fighters Cancer Fund, Inc.; and
WHEREAS, John M. Janos's commitment to excellence, and his spirit of
humanity, carried over into all fields of enterprise, including charita-
ble and civic endeavors; and
WHEREAS, Involved in music from a young age, playing in bands with his
childhood friends, John M. Janos enjoyed playing with many local musi-
cians and worked recently at Mansion Recording Studio; he built the
Mansion studio with close friends with the considerate and kindhearted
goal to help talented young artists in the Binghamton community start
their musical careers; and
WHEREAS, Affectionately known as Bear to some, John M. Janos also
enjoyed fishing and was a devoted, loving family man, who always watched
out for everyone, from colleagues, to clients, to people he barely knew;
WHEREAS, John M. Janos epitomized humble service in that he just
quietly went about helping others, never seeking recognition, praise or
thanks; he was a man who just did things because they were right and the
satisfaction of helping others was all he needed; and
WHEREAS, Always generous with his attention and time, everyone around
John M. Janos noticed his genuine spirit and kind nature, especially
children, who called him "Mr. John"; he loved kids and nothing gave him
greater happiness than bragging about his own; and
WHEREAS, Predeceased by his father, John Janos, John M. Janos is
survived by his loving wife of 34 years, Sharon Buyck Janos; his chil-
dren, Michael and Kelly Janos, Lisa Janos, and Daniel Janos; his mother,
Helen Kaschak; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Mary Kaschak, Helen
and Sandy Burnaby, Patricia and Patrick O'Day; a brother, David Janos;
and brother-in-law, Allen (Jody) Buyck; as well as nieces and nephews,
Jessica O'Day and Ben Wolf, Nicholas and Amy, Kris Harris, Danielle
Janos, Megan Buyck and Jimmie Buyck; and
WHEREAS, Armed with a humanistic spirit and imbued with a sense of
compassion, John M. Janos leaves behind a legacy which will long endure
the passage of time and will remain as a comforting memory to all he
served and befriended; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
mourn the death of John M. Janos, distinguished Firefighter and devoted
member of his community; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the family of John M. Janos.
