LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION recognizing Kwang Nam Lee upon the occasion of
his designation as a 2013 Memorial Day Distinguished Veteran Honoree

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to acknowledge
outstanding individuals whose professional lives, personal endeavors and
community service are an example and inspiration to their colleagues,
friends, and family; and
WHEREAS, Members and former members of the Armed Services of the
United States and its allies from the State of New York, who have served
so valiantly and honorably in wars in which this country's freedom was
at stake, as well as in the preservation of peace in peace time, deserve
a special salute from this Legislative Body; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to recognize
Kwang Nam Lee upon the occasion of his designation as a 2013 Memorial
Day Distinguished Veteran Honoree; this auspicious occasion will be
celebrated on Monday, May 27, 2013; and
WHEREAS, A resident of Flushing, New York, Kwang Nam Lee graduated
from Sungkyun kwan University in Korea in 1964 with a degree in English;
and
WHEREAS, Immediately after graduating from college, Kwang Nam Lee
entered into the Republic of Korea Marine Corps Officer Candidate School
and later attended the Marine Military English School and the Army Mili-
tary Intelligence School; and
WHEREAS, In 1968, Kwang Nam Lee deployed to serve as a Captain in the
Vietnam War as part of the Republic of Korea Blue Dragon Brigade, one of
the three main units deployed to Vietnam to fight alongside United
States Armed Forces personnel; and
WHEREAS, In 1970, Kwang Nam Lee received a military scholarship from
the South Korean government to attend Officer Candidates School at
Marine Corps Base in Quantico, Virginia, and the U.S. Naval Instructor
Training Center in Great Lakes, Illinois; and
WHEREAS, In 1984, Kwang Nam Lee immigrated to the United States; in
1994, he served as the President of the Korean Veterans Association,
Eastern U.S.A. from 2002 to 2010, he served as a major in the New York
State National Guard; and
WHEREAS, Currently, Kwang Nam Lee is the President of the R.O.K.- U.S.
Marine Foundation and the R.O.K. - U.S. Vietnam War Veterans; he estab-
lished both of these organizations in 2012 to recognize and honor
persons who have served in war and to provide comfort, support, and
additional resources to improve the quality of life of military person-
nel, veterans and their families; and
WHEREAS, In addition, Kwang Nam Lee volunteers as the Liaison Officer
of the Korean War Veterans Association; and
WHEREAS, Throughout the entire period of his military, professional
and community service, a period of constructive involvement, Kwang Nam
Lee has stood constant in dignity, good grace and humor, and has earned
the respect and admiration of his colleagues, family and friends; and
WHEREAS, Our veterans deserve to be recognized, commended and thanked
by the people of the State of New York for their service and for their
dedication; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
recognize Kwang Nam Lee upon the occasion of his designation as a 2013
Memorial Day Distinguished Veteran Honoree; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Kwang Nam Lee.
