LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Gerry Martin upon the occasion of his
designation as 2013 Inductee into the Auburn Alumni Hall of Distinction,
on June 6, 2013

WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to take note of and
publicly acknowledge individuals who have distinguished themselves
through their exemplary careers, accomplishments, and purposeful lives
of service to their community; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor
Gerry Martin upon the occasion of his designation as 2013 Inductee into
the Auburn Alumni Hall of Distinction; the Induction Ceremony will take
place on Thursday, June 6, 2013, at the Emerson Park Pavilion in Auburn,
New York; and
WHEREAS, The Auburn Alumni Hall of Distinction was established in 2012
by the Auburn Education Foundation to recognize, honor and celebrate
graduates who have distinguished themselves through outstanding academ-
ic, professional, or civic achievements and to inspire current students
to pursue a path towards personal success; and
WHEREAS, A man of singular merit, Gerry Martin, Central High School
Class of 1965, has continually demonstrated tremendous competence,
extraordinary intelligence and diligent leadership in his unwavering
service to both his community and his profession, and consequently has
been selected for this most prestigious honor; and
WHEREAS, Gerry Martin retired in 2011 from a remarkable 43-year teach-
ing career that inspired and uplifted countless students, peers and
colleagues; and
WHEREAS, Gerry Martin began his work in education at St. Alphonsus
School where he coached the basketball team, started the Political
Convention Election process, and put out the school newspaper; he went
on to teach at West Middle and Mount Carmel Middle Schools before join-
ing the faculty at Auburn High School in 1974, becoming one its most
beloved teachers; and
WHEREAS, During his tenure at Auburn High School, Gerry Martin started
and advised the school's History Club which organized countless trips to
significant places in our Nation's history, including Philadelphia,
Colonial Williamsburg, Hyde Park's Franklin Delano Roosevelt Home and
Vanderbilt Mansion and Washington DC; under his leadership the club also
put on plays that were both controversial and engaging; and
WHEREAS, Gerry Martin is the co-creator of the Cayuga County Model
Senate Program; it ran from 1975-2008 and engaged students in writing
legislation, debating, and voting, embodying his renowned teaching
philosophy that active student involvement is the best way to learn; and
WHEREAS, Gerry Martin received many honors, awards, and accolades
throughout his career; he spent the 1981-1982 academic year in England
on a Fulbright Teacher Exchange Scholarship, was the 1997 Wal-Mart
Teacher of the Year, 2000 Teen Ink Teacher of the Year, and was desig-
nated in 2004 and 2005 as a Cornell University Merrill Presidential
Scholar Outstanding Educator; and
WHEREAS, Gerry Martin earned an associate's degree from Auburn Commu-
nity College (now known as Cayuga Community College) in 1967 and a Bach-
elor of Science from SUNY Brockport in 1969, majoring in Economics with
a minor in History; he earned a Master of Science in Education from SUNY
Cortland in 1971, and completed advanced coursework in History and Poli-
tical Science at Syracuse University and SUNY Oswego; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when individ-
uals of such noble aims and accomplishments are brought to our atten-

tion, they should be celebrated and recognized by all the citizens of
the great State of New York; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Gerry Martin upon the occasion of his designation as 2013 Inductee
into the Auburn Alumni Hall of Distinction; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Gerry Martin.
