LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Colonel Donald Bernstein upon the occa-
sion of his retirement after 20 years of distinguished service with the
Minisink Valley High School JROTC Program

WHEREAS, Individuals who distinguish themselves in their profession and
in service to their country and community merit the highest commenda-
tion; and
WHEREAS, Throughout his distinguished military career in the United
States Army, Colonel Donald Bernstein served with distinction in many
capacities; and
WHEREAS, From 1958 through 1960, Colonel Bernstein was an Airborne
Infantry Platoon Leader, Chemical, Biological and Radiological School
Instructor and Recondo School Operations and Training Officer at Fort
Campbell, Kentucky; and
WHEREAS, From 1961 through 1963, Colonel Bernstein was an Aviator and
a Training, Supply and Logistics Officer in the 8th Infantry Division
Aviation Artillery Flight Company and Battalion at the Army's Baumhold-
er, Finthin and Bad Kreuznack bases in Germany; and
WHEREAS, He was the Company Commander, Advanced Infantry Training,
Vietnam at Fort Dix, New Jersey from 1965-1966; and
WHEREAS, From 1966-1968, Colonel Bernstein was the Executive and Oper-
ations Officer for the 225th Surveillance Aviation Company at Fort
Lewis, Washington and at Phu Hiep in Vietnam; and
WHEREAS, From 1969 through 1970, he served as the Battalion Commander,
Advanced Infantry Training, Vietnam at Fort Lewis, Washington; and, from
1970 through 1971, he was an Army Surveillance Officer, with the Joint
Intelligence, Military Assistance Command, in Vietnam; and
WHEREAS, Colonel Bernstein, in addition, was a Professor of Military
Science at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia from 1972 to
1975 and, from 1975 through 1978, he again served in Germany, this time
in Frankfurt as the Inspector General of the 5th Support Command, 5th
Corps; and
WHEREAS, A highly decorated officer, Colonel Bernstein earned the
Distinguished Flying Cross with one cluster, the Air Medal with 17 clus-
ters, the Legion of Merit, the Bronze Star Medal with two clusters, an
Expert Infantryman Badge and Ranger Tab, Senior Airborne Wings, Senior
Aviator Wings and several additional awards and decorations; and
WHEREAS, Following his distinguished service in the United States
Army, Colonel Bernstein began a new career in which he also served with
distinction; and
WHEREAS, For 27 continuous years Colonel Bernstein taught high school
JROTC in two high school JROTC programs, one in the Minisink Valley
Central School District, Slate Hill, New York, and the other at Lakewood
High School in New Jersey; and
WHEREAS, Colonel Bernstein and Ronni, his wife of 57 years, are the
proud and loving parents of Steven and his wife Sherry and Laurie and
her husband Joe, and the devoted grandparents of Brian, Morgan, Raichel,
Niaomi, and Danielle; and
WHEREAS, Having exhibited his patriotism both at home and abroad,
Colonel Donald Bernstein has demonstrated his love for his country and
his community, and merits, forevermore, the highest respect of his State
and Nation; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Colonel Donald Bernstein upon the occasion of his retirement after
20 years of distinguished service with the Minisink Valley High School
JROTC Program; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Colonel Donald Bernstein.
