LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commemorating the 150th Anniversary of the
Village and Town of Frankfort, New York

WHEREAS, It is the intent of this Legislative Body to honor and commem-
orate the distinguished histories of the communities which comprise the
noble body of this great Empire State; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to commem-
orate the 150th Anniversary of the Village and Town of Frankfort, in
Herkimer County, New York; and
WHEREAS, The Village and Town of Frankfort are located in the south
central portion of Herkimer County along the southern banks of the Erie
Canal and Mohawk River; encompassed within the Town of Frankfort, the
Village sits at the northeast corner of the Town; and
WHEREAS, It is only fitting that the Village of Frankfort was named
after Lawrence Frank, a German; he first settled in Frankfort in the mid
1700s and a number of German and Irish settlers followed, but in the
late 1800s, something changed; and
WHEREAS, Between 1880 and 1920, thousands of Italian immigrants began
descending upon the northeastern United States, and many of them chose
Frankfort as the place to call home; both the Town and Village became a
popular industrial area and farming and the Westshore Railroad were also
appealing to the new citizens; and
WHEREAS, As they settled and worked the railroads, many of them even-
tually opened their own small businesses and shops, thus establishing
some level of prosperity in the area; signs of Frankfort's Italian
heritage can be seen today as evidenced by US Census data which suggests
that roughly 45 percent of the people living in the Village and Town
today claim to have Italian ancestors; and
WHEREAS, The Town of Frankfort is east of Utica and is also home to
the Great American Irish Festival, which is one of the fastest growing
Irish Festivals in America, held within the Herkimer County Fairgrounds;
in addition, the Balloon Farm was listed on the National Register of
Historic Places in 1998; and
WHEREAS, Remaining fruitful over the ebb and.flow of decades of growth
and change, the Village and Town of Frankfort continues its commitment
to enhancing the quality of life of its citizens, ensuring a positive
business, institutional and educational climate, and providing all
essential services; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 150th Anniversary of the Village and Town of Frankfort,
New York, recognizing the significance of the role it continues to play
in the life of the community of the State of New York; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the Town of Frankfort, New York.
