LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring the Genesee Valley Rotary Camp upon the
occasion of their 50th Anniversary

WHEREAS, It is the intent of this Legislative Body to recognize and
honor those esteemed organizations that provide significant opportu-
nities for fellowship and outdoor activities for young people with disa-
bilities in this great Empire State; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor the
Genesee Valley Rotary Camp upon the occasion of their 50th Anniversary;
WHEREAS, The Genesee Valley Rotary Camp is a one week summer camp for
young people with various disabilities; and
WHEREAS, The camp takes place every summer during August at Camp Sam
Wood, a beautifully wooded site in Pike, New York; the Genesee Valley
Rotary Camp serves approximately 100 campers and employs about 60 staff
members each summer; and
WHEREAS, Activities at the Genesee Valley Rotary Camp include Adven-
ture, Arts and Crafts, Archery, Music, Nature, Physical Education and
Riflery; campers can also enjoy an in-ground pool and play on basketball
courts; and
WHEREAS, The Genesee Valley Rotary Camp was first established in 1963,
as a not-for-profit organization serving children and young adults from
Livingston, Steuben, Wyoming and Allegany counties, specifically includ-
ing the towns of Dansville, Wayland, Geneseo, Avon, Perry, Mount Morris,
Livonia, Lima, Fillmore, Pavilion, Nunda, Belmont, Caledonia - Mumford,
Cuba, Friendship and Wellsville; and
WHEREAS, There is no cost for the camp experience; financial support
is provided by the Rotary Clubs of the Genesee Valley and through
private donations; and
WHEREAS, Staff members come from diverse backgrounds including special
education teachers and high school and college students interested in
working with children with disabilities; working at the camp has become
a family tradition for many of the staff members; and
WHEREAS, Every year, a theme is selected for the week; previous themes
include animals, cars, the Wild West, Dr. Seuss, outer space, super
heroes, pirates and many more; and
WHEREAS, Awards are presented annually to outstanding campers at the
end of each camp week for Camper of the Year and Most Spirited Camper;
Rookie of the Year and Veteran of the Year awards also are presented to
an outstanding first year counselor and an outstanding veteran counse-
lor; and
WHEREAS, Throughout the years, the Genesee Valley Rotary Camp has
provided an invaluable experience to many young people who might not
have had the opportunity to experience the joys of summer camp; now,
therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor the Genesee Valley Rotary Camp upon the occasion of their 50th
Anniversary; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the Genesee Valley Rotary Camp.
