LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commending Fire Chief Kevin Carrero upon the
occasion of his designation as NASSAU HERALD 2012 Person of the Year, in
recognition of his extraordinary efforts in the aftermath of Hurricane
Sandy

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to acknowledge those
esteemed individuals within the State of New York who distinguish them-
selves in service to their community; and
WHEREAS, Fire Chief Kevin Carrero has given not only of his time and
energies but also of his competence, intelligence, and leadership and
consequently has been designated for special honor; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to commend Fire Chief
Kevin Carrero upon the occasion of his designation as NASSAU HERALD 2012
Person of the Year, in recognition of his extraordinary efforts in the
aftermath of Hurricane Sandy; and
WHEREAS, Kevin Carrero, chief of the Meadowmere Park Fire Department,
instinctively stepped into the role of unofficial community leader after
Hurricane Sandy, the biggest emergency in his community's history,
struck the tiny Nassau County neighborhood on October 30, 2012; and
WHEREAS, A lifelong resident of Meadowmere Park, Kevin Carrero gradu-
ated from Lawrence High School in 1999; he attended Nassau Community
College and New York Institute of Technology, with a focus on engineer-
ing; and
WHEREAS, Kevin Carrero operates his own contracting business, U-Name-
It Construction, Inc.; and
WHEREAS, Kevin Carrero began his volunteer service with the Meadowmere
Park Fire Department eight years ago, moving up the ranks from Lieuten-
ant to Captain, serving 3 1/2 years as Second Assistant Chief and 18
months as First Assistant Chief; he became Fire Chief shortly before
Hurricane Sandy devastated his community; and
WHEREAS, Under Fire Chief Kevin Carrero's leadership, the Meadowmere
Park Fire Department was able to provide crucial help to residents
despite being severely short-staffed due to the storm's impact on its
members; and
WHEREAS, Fire Chief Kevin Carrero equipped the firehouse to provide
sleeping areas and hot showers for residents, and provided security by
way of lights powered by one of its fire trucks; and
WHEREAS, In addition, he, along with other firefighters and neighbors,
took on the task of cooking meals for as many as 70 residents each day
for several weeks after the storm; and
WHEREAS, As virtually every home in the Meadowmere Park area had been
flooded, Kevin Carrero recruited members of the Fire Department to help
residents clean out their houses and also to help restore power, restart
boilers, and make repairs to some of his neighbors' homes; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that individuals who
exemplify a spirit of humanity should be celebrated for their noble
efforts on behalf of others; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend Fire Chief Kevin Carrero upon the occasion of his designation as
NASSAU HERALD 2012 Person of the Year, in recognition of his extraor-
dinary efforts in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Fire Chief Kevin Carrero.
