LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Carol Barkalow upon the occasion of her
induction into the Shenendehowa Central School District Hall of Distin-
guished Alumni

WHEREAS, The State of New York takes great pride in acknowledging its
esteemed residents who have distinguished themselves in their community;
and
WHEREAS, Carol Barkalow will be inducted into the Shenendehowa Central
School District Hall of Distinguished Alumni as part of the first class
of inductees during the Shenendehowa Educational Foundation's Green and
White Gala to be held at the Hilton Garden Inn on June 8, 2013; and
WHEREAS, Carol graduated from Shenendehowa High School in 1976; and
WHEREAS, She immediately entered the United States Military Academy;
and
WHEREAS, Carol was part of the first group of females admitted to West
Point; and
WHEREAS, She was one of 119 women cadets in the first class and one of
only 62 women who finished to graduate in 1980; and
WHEREAS, Carol authored a book about her glass ceiling-breaking expe-
rience, titled IN THE MEN'S HOUSE, which was published in 1990; and
WHEREAS, She retired in 2002 with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel; and
WHEREAS, Her successful and ground-breaking military career and her
honorable service to her country will long inspire Shenendehowa
students; and
WHEREAS, Her induction into the Hall of Distinguished Alumni is a
lasting and fitting tribute to her legacy; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Carol Barkalow as she is inducted into the Shenendehowa Hall of
Distinguished Alumni; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Carol Barkalow.
