LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Dr. Herbert Lepor upon the occasion of
his designation as recipient of the Humanitarian Award by the Aleh Foun-
dation

WHEREAS, It is incumbent upon the people of the State of New York to
recognize and acknowledge those within our midst who have made signif-
icant contributions to the quality of life therein; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to honor Dr. Herbert
Lepor upon the occasion of his designation as recipient of the Humanita-
rian Award by the Aleh Foundation, to be celebrated at its 29th Anniver-
sary Awards Dinner Ceremony on Wednesday, May 8, 2013, at the Museum of
Jewish Heritage in New York City; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Herbert Lepor is one of the leading internationally
recognized experts in the field of prostate cancer; he completed his
urology training at the Brady Urological Institute of the Johns Hopkins
Medical Institutions in 1985; his first academic position was as Chief
of Urology at Jewish Hospital in St. Louis and Assistant Professor of
Surgery at the Washington University School of Medicine; and
WHEREAS, At the age of 37, Dr. Lepor was appointed Chairman of Urology
at the NYU School of Medicine, the youngest chairman of a major academic
urology department in the country; in 1996, he was the recipient of the
American Urological Association's Gold Cystoscope Award, which recog-
nizes superior contributions to the field of Urology; and
WHEREAS, A few years later, Dr. Lepor was inducted into the Hopkins
Society of Scholars, an honor bestowed on alumni of Johns Hopkins
University who have made outstanding contributions to their respective
fields of interest; recently, he was inducted into the Clinical Society
of the Genitourinary Surgeons; membership in this prestigious society is
limited to 22 members of the academic urology community; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Lepor has lectured throughout the world and has been an
invited named visiting professor at over 20 urology institutions in the
country; he has published over 300 articles in the peer-reviewed litera-
ture; many of these articles are related to improving outcomes following
radical prostatectomy; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Lepor's surgical outcomes are rigorously ascertained and
are amongst the best reported in the surgical literature; he had a
vision which was to establish a multidisciplinary team of urological
oncological surgeons, radiation oncologists, medical oncologists,
pathologists, health services investigators, and radiologists who were
bound by one common interest, optimizing the treatment of prostate
cancer; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Lepor is the Director of the Smilow Center; today, the
Smilow team is on the forefront of prostate cancer screening, diagnosis
and treatment, and is well-positioned to develop the new treatment para-
digms for prostate cancer; and
WHEREAS, With him throughout has been his wife, Ellen, who feels priv-
ileged to be a part of his life and rejoices in his achievements; and
WHEREAS, A true asset to society, Dr. Herbert Lepor's distinguished
record merits the recognition and respectful tribute of this Legislative
Body; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Dr. Herbert Lepor upon the occasion of his designation as recipi-
ent of the Humanitarian Award by the Aleh Foundation; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Dr. Herbert Lepor.
