LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Mary "Christine" Doherty upon the occa-
sion of her designation as Deputy Marshal of the 20th Annual Bay Ridge
St. Patrick's Day Parade on March 24, 2013

WHEREAS, St. Patrick's Day is a time for people of all nationalities and
generations to assemble and celebrate the rich culture and heritage of
the Irish people throughout the United States; and
WHEREAS, A St. Patrick's Day parade reflects and records the ongoing
history of the United States and Ireland, and provides opportunity for
people of all generations to assemble in ethnic pride and pageantry; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor Mary
"Christine" Doherty upon the occasion of her designation as Deputy
Marshal of the 20th Annual Bay Ridge St. Patrick's Day Parade to be held
on Sunday, March 24, 2013; and
WHEREAS, Mary "Christine" Doherty was born and raised in Bay Ridge,
Brooklyn, and still resides there today; she began her education at St.
Patrick's School and continued her education at Bishop Kearney High
School until her graduation in 1988; and
WHEREAS, Christine Doherty attended St. John's University and obtained
her Bachelor of Science degree in Transportation and Logistics in 1993;
and
WHEREAS, Christine Doherty's parents, Marie and Sean Doherty, both
immigrated to New York from Dublin, Ireland in 1963; once in Bay Ridge,
they met up with Sean's sister and brother who had emigrated before him;
they settled into Bay Ridge and began a family; and
WHEREAS, In 1979, Sean and Marie Doherty had decided they wanted to
return to Ireland, so they packed up the family and returned to Dublin;
after a year away, they realized that Bay Ridge had become their true
home, so they returned to the same home they left; and
WHEREAS, In 1997, Christine Doherty joined the New York City Police
Department; she started her career in the 60th Precinct in Coney Island,
and quickly moved up the ranks; and
WHEREAS, With just five years on, Christine Doherty was promoted to
Sergeant and sent to work in the theater district in New York City; she
was then asked to join the Press Office for the NYPD where she spent
several years acting as a liaison with the NYPD and the Media; and
WHEREAS, Upon her promotion to Lieutenant in 2006, she was assigned to
the 10th Precinct in Chelsea; later that same year, she was transferred
to the Special Operations Division at Floyd Bennett Field; and
WHEREAS, In this capacity, Christine Doherty coordinated all the
specialty units of the NYPD, including the Emergency Services Unit, the
Aviation Unit, the Mounted Unit, and the Harbor Unit, as well as the
Disorder Control Unit; and
WHEREAS, Christine Doherty's proudest moment was when she was promoted
to Captain in April 2011; upon her promotion, she became the Executive
Officer of the 72nd Precinct, in Sunset Park; and
WHEREAS, After just six months at the 72nd Precinct, Christine Doherty
was asked to join the NYPD's elite Counterterrorism Bureau where she and
her colleagues strive on a daily basis to keep the citizens of New York
City safe; and
WHEREAS, With her throughout have been her Mom who is extremely proud
and supportive of her career; her long-time friend, Jim Coleman, whom
she married in 2006; her sister, Pamela and brother-in-law, Scott; and
her brother, Sean, and sister-in-law, Samantha; as well as 13 nieces and
nephews, all of whom feel privileged to be a part of her life and
rejoice in her achievements; and

WHEREAS, A fitting choice for Deputy Marshal of the 20th Annual Bay
Ridge St. Patrick's Day Parade, Christine Doherty embodies the spirit
and the cherished ideals and values of Irish-Americans of this great
State and Nation; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when individ-
uals of such noble aims and accomplishments are brought to our atten-
tion, they should be celebrated and recognized by all the citizens of
the great State of New York; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Mary "Christine" Doherty upon the occasion of her designation as
Deputy Marshal of the 20th Annual Bay Ridge St. Patrick's Day Parade;
and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Mary "Christine" Doherty.
