LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring the Metropolitan Council on Jewish
Poverty upon the occasion of hosting its 37th Annual Legislative Break-
fast on Sunday, June 2, 2013

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize that the
quality and character of life in the communities across New York State
are reflective of the concerned and dedicated efforts of those organiza-
tions which devote themselves to the welfare of the community and its
citizenry; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to honor the Metropol-
itan Council on Jewish Poverty upon the occasion of hosting its 37th
Annual Legislative Breakfast on Sunday, June 2, 2013, in New York City;
and
WHEREAS, The Metropolitan Council on Jewish Poverty (Met Council), is
dedicated to the alleviation of social, economic, housing and related
problems of the Jewish poor, working poor, elderly and recent immigrants
in the New York City area; and
WHEREAS, The Met Council is one of the largest providers of affordable
housing for New York City's low and moderate-income families, the home-
less and mentally disabled, and the elderly; and
WHEREAS, The Council also offers comprehensive social services, such
as crisis intervention, the Family Violence Program, food programs,
career services, home services, home health care, camp scholarships for
children from needy families, and services for Holocaust survivors; and
WHEREAS, An affiliated agency of the UJA-Federation of New York, the
Met Council is a not-for-profit organization representing and coordinat-
ing the efforts of grassroots Jewish Community Councils citywide and
national Jewish organizations; and
WHEREAS, The Met Council works to establish linkages between Jewish
groups, non-Jewish groups and governmental agencies and helps to stabi-
lize and preserve neighborhoods with substantial Jewish populations by
assessing needs and bringing resources to these areas; and
WHEREAS, For over 40 years, the Met Council has been a defender of and
advocate for New Yorkers in need, and has raised awareness around the
growing problem of Jewish poverty; and
WHEREAS, A true asset to society, the Met Council's distinguished
record merits the recognition and respectful tribute of this Legislative
Body; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor the Metropolitan Council on Jewish Poverty upon the occasion of
hosting its 37th Annual Legislative Breakfast on Sunday, June 2, 2013;
and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Joseph C. Shenker, Esq., President, Metropolitan Council on
Jewish Poverty.
