LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring George Tvelia upon the occasion of his
retirement after 43 years of distinguished service to Suffolk County
Community College

WHEREAS, This Legislative Body seeks to acknowledge those individuals
whose professional lives and civic endeavors serve to enhance the stat-
ure of the State of New York; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor
George Tvelia upon the occasion of his retirement after 43 years of
distinguished service to Suffolk County Community College, to be cele-
brated on Friday, February 1, 2013, at Villa Lombardi's in Holbrook, New
York; and
WHEREAS, For the past 43 years, George Tvelia rendered faithful,
conscientious and valuable service to Suffolk County Community College;
and
WHEREAS, A proud alumnus of Suffolk County Community College, George
Tvelia was hired by the College on September 1, 1969, as a Technical
Assistant in Biology; and
WHEREAS, During the span of his 43-year career with the College,
George Tvelia has held the positions of Senior Technical Assistant,
Instructor, Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, Professor, Assist-
ant Dean, Associate Dean, Interim Executive Dean, and Associate Dean for
Faculty and Professional Advancement; and
WHEREAS, In addition, George Tvelia has served on numerous governance
committees, as well as campus and college-wide committees; he been a
student, a member of the faculty, an administrator and a union represen-
tative, serving as an officer for the Faculty Association and Guild of
Administrative Officers for many years; and
WHEREAS, Recently, George Tvelia organized SCCC's All College Day and
Professional Development Day; and
WHEREAS, Initiatives that will be part of George Tvelia's legacy with
the Suffolk County Community College include his efforts to initiate and
develop the College's Leadership Academy, the Excelsior Program, and the
college-wide Professional Development Program; and
WHEREAS, Moreover, George Tvelia modernized the Office of Adjunct
Services by upgrading manual operations with new electronic services;
and
WHEREAS, In his capacity as Associate Dean for Faculty and Profes-
sional Advancement, George Tvelia served with loyalty, honor and
distinction; and
WHEREAS, George Tvelia's outstanding efforts have been recognized
through the years; he has been selected as the recipient of numerous
leadership awards from the College, SUNY, Cornell Cooperative Extension,
and The Chair Academy; and
WHEREAS, In addition, George Tvelia was chosen as one of only two
recipients from New York State for the 2012 John and Suanne Roueche
Excellence Award, presented by the League for Innovation; and
WHEREAS, In his official acts, George Tvelia was governed by a keen
sense of duty and always showed a unique grasp of human problems; and
WHEREAS, During his tenure with Suffolk County Community College,
George Tvelia earned the admiration, esteem and affection of his
colleagues; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor George Tvelia upon the occasion of his retirement after 43 years
of distinguished service to Suffolk County Community College; and be it
further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to George Tvelia.
