LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commending the Emerald Association of Long
Island, Inc. upon the occasion of its 174th Annual Emerald Ball on Janu-
ary 26, 2013

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize that the
quality and character of life in the communities across New York State
are reflective of the concerned and dedicated efforts of those organiza-
tions and individuals who would devote themselves to the welfare of the
community and its citizenry; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to commend
the Emerald Association of Long Island, Inc. upon the occasion of its
174th Annual Emerald Ball to be held Saturday, January 26, 2013, at the
Battery Gardens, New York, New York; and
WHEREAS, The Emerald Association of Long Island, Inc. has a 174 year
history of providing financial support to the orphans of the City of
Brooklyn, initially through the Roman Catholic Orphan Asylum Society of
Brooklyn, and later to all needy children in the Diocese of Brooklyn
since 1957; and
WHEREAS, The Emerald Association of Long Island, Inc. has the
distinction of being the charitable organization with the longest
running annual fundraising ball of any society of its kind in the United
States; and
WHEREAS, The first ball was held on February 7, 1839, at Smith's City
Hotel in Brooklyn, and the event has been held at the Waldorf Astoria
Hotel on Park Avenue since 1932, until this year which is being held at
Battery Gardens; and
WHEREAS, It is the practice of this Legislative Body that when organ-
izations of such noble aims and accomplishments are brought to our
attention, they should be celebrated and recognized by all the citizens
of this great Empire State; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend the Emerald Association of Long Island, Inc. upon the occasion
of its 174th Annual Emerald Ball on January 26, 2013; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to The Emerald Association of Long Island, Inc.
