LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commemorating the history and accomplishments of
Repertorio Espanol

WHEREAS, The arts, in whatever form depicted, are central to human
expression; they are truly a universal language and their contribution
to the development of friendship and understanding among all peoples
cannot be underestimated; and
WHEREAS, The history, the heritage, and the lives of the people of all
countries and all cultures are portrayed in their music, dance and
performance; the art and act of sharing them enriches us altogether; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to commemorate the
history and accomplishments of Repertorio Espanol; and
WHEREAS, Repertorio Espanol was founded in 1968 by producer Gilberto
Zaldivar and Artistic Director Rene Buch to introduce the best of Latin
American, Spanish and Hispanic American theatre in distinctive, quality
productions, and to bring theatre to a broad audience in New York City;
and
WHEREAS, Rene Buch has successfully made his dream a reality and
bridged the gaps among the Hispanic American community through the use
of theatre, opera, and the visual and fine arts; and
WHEREAS, Repertorio Espanol has introduced theatre to a wide variety
of groups in New York City, including seniors, students and Hispanics of
all national backgrounds; and
WHEREAS, Through maintaining a dramatic ensemble for the past 45
years, Repertorio Espanol has attracted many talented veterans and
emerging Hispanic actors, including Ofelia Gonzalez, the first actress
to win an OBIE Award without having performed in English; and
WHEREAS, Repertorio Espanol has continued to show its commitment to
introducing live theatre to generations of New Yorkers from all back-
grounds, and in turn has revived the excitement for the riches of the
Hispanic cultures and heritages; and
WHEREAS, Repertorio Espanol has received a long list of awards for its
exceptional work such as, Best New York Theatre for both 2011 and 2012,
the HOLA Lifetime Achievement Award, and numerous HOLA Awards for
Outstanding Achievement in Dramatic Productions; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to honor and pay
tribute to those organizations and individuals whose commitment and
creative talents contribute to the entertainment and cultural enrichment
of the citizens of the State of New York; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the history and accomplishments of Repertorio Espanol, and
to commend its 45 years of dedication and commitment to introducing live
theatre, opera, and the visual and fine arts to all generations of
Hispanics, and bridging the gaps between the Hispanic and American
cultures; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Repertorio Espanol.
