LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commending the East Side Community Group for
Senior Services, Inc., the Stein Senior Center, upon the occasion of the
celebration of its 39th Anniversary and the occupancy of its new home

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize organiza-
tions of enduring tradition which faithfully serve the needs of the
community and its citizens with diligence and compassionate commitment
to improving the quality and dignity of life in the community; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern and fully in accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to commend
the East Side Community Group for Senior Services, Inc., familiarly
known as the Stein Senior Center, upon the occasion of the celebration,
on March 22, 2013, of its 39th Anniversary and the occupancy of its new
home on East 23rd Street; and
WHEREAS, The East Side Community Group for Senior Services, Inc., also
known as the Stein Senior Center, opened officially in 1974 and has been
in continuous operation ever since; and
WHEREAS, From the outset, the seniors the Center serves have been
involved in the running of the Center; and
WHEREAS, The Stein Senior Center provides a range of programs and
services to help meet the day-to-day and long-term independent living
needs of its members; and
WHEREAS, Among these are an innovative Alzheimer's early intervention
program; assistance for crime victims; lectures on financial planning,
health and wellness; and the provision of nutritious meals and nutrition
education; and
WHEREAS, The Stein Senior Center also has a computer lab and offers
enrichment classes and activities ranging from opera appreciation to
belly dancing and a Yiddish Club; and
WHEREAS, At the end of December 2011, it was necessary for the Stein
Senior Center to leave its longtime home on East 24th Street and First
Avenue so that the organization it leased space from could expand its
own services; and
WHEREAS, The Stein Senior Center operated out of the basement of East
End Temple, located at 245 East 17th Street, for more than a year while
the Center's new 5,000 square foot space was renovated; and
WHEREAS, On February 4, 2013, the Stein Senior Center proudly and
joyfully opened the doors of its new home at 204 East 23rd Street, which
includes a cafeteria, kitchen, computer lab, activity room, and lecture
room, as well as staff offices; and
WHEREAS, An official celebration of the Stein Senior Center's 39th
Anniversary and the occupancy of its new home will be held on March 22,
2013; and
WHEREAS, Older New Yorkers bring their special wisdom, experience, and
enthusiasm to countless endeavors, helping to shape and strengthen the
character of our communities and the quality of our lives; and
WHEREAS, The senior citizens of the East Side exemplify the more than
three million residents of New York State who are 60 years of age or
older; they help to preserve the customs, traditions, and values of the
many ethnic groups which comprise the rich fabric of the community of
the City and State of New York and they are vital, integral, and
contributing members of our society; and
WHEREAS, The threads which form the quality and character of senior
life are woven through dedicated service, carefully rendered, by such
organizations of purposeful goodwill as the East Side Community Group
for Senior Services, Inc.; and

WHEREAS, The East Side Community Group for Senior Services, Inc. has a
proud tradition of helping the older citizens of its community remain
valuable, involved, and productive members of the community as they
reach the fullness of years; and
WHEREAS, As it celebrates 39 years of service to seniors, the East
Side Community Group for Senior Services, Inc. may be justly proud of
helping to meet the needs of the area's cherished senior citizens with
love, dedication and commitment and of providing a comfortable and
friendly environment where they know they are welcome and will be treat-
ed with the dignity and respect they deserve; and
WHEREAS, It is through the commitment of the Stein Senior Center's
founding and current members, staff, board of directors, elected repre-
sentatives and community supporters that the Stein Senior Center contin-
ues to thrive; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend the Stein Senior Center, upon the occasion of the joyful cele-
bration, on March 22, 2013, of its 39th Anniversary and the occupancy of
its new home on East 23rd Street, commending the Center for its purpose-
ful endeavors and noting the tradition of caring service it has estab-
lished; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the East Side Community Group for Senior Services, Inc..
