LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commending Doris Kearns Goodwin upon the occasion
of her designation for special recognition as a 2013 Gala Honoree by the
Rockville Centre Education Foundation

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize and pay
tribute to those distinguished citizens who devote their time and ener-
gies to the service of their community and profession, participating in
civic affairs and enhancing the character and quality of life for all
citizens; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to commend
Doris Kearns Goodwin upon the occasion of her designation for special
recognition as a 2013 Gala Honoree by the Rockville Centre Education
Foundation to be celebrated at its Annual Gala on Saturday, April 20,
2013, at the Madison Theatre at Molloy College, Rockville Centre, New
York; and
WHEREAS, Since 1991, the Rockville Centre Education Foundation has
been enriching the classroom experience by funding grants to teachers
for schools in Rockville's elementary, middle and high schools; and
WHEREAS, A Pulitzer Prize-winning historian and biographer, Doris
Kearns Goodwin is the author of five best-selling biographies; her book
TEAM OF RIVALS: THE POLITICAL GENIUS OF ABRAHAM LINCOLN is the basis for
Steven Spielberg's critically acclaimed film "Lincoln"; and
WHEREAS, WAIT TILL NEXT YEAR is Doris Kearns Goodwin's touching and
best-selling memoir of growing up in Rockville Centre, in love with her
neighborhood, family and baseball; and
WHEREAS, In WAIT TILL NEXT YEAR, Doris Kearns Goodwin introduces her
readers to the two people who most influenced her early in life, the
first being her mother, who taught her the joy of books, and the second
being her father, who taught her the joy of baseball; and
WHEREAS, As an historian and political news analyst, Doris Kearns
Goodwin frequently appears on national television offering keen histor-
ical perspective on political and current events; and
WHEREAS, Doris Kearns Goodwin, who began her academic career in the
Rockville Centre school system, received her Bachelor of Arts degree
from Colby College, where she was elected to Phi Beta Kappa; and
WHEREAS, Furthermore, Doris Kearns Goodwin earned her Ph.D. in Govern-
ment from Harvard University, and has been a Woodrow Wilson Fellow and a
White House Fellow; and
WHEREAS, With her nationally acclaimed writing accomplishments and her
deep connections to Rockville Centre, Doris Kearns Goodwin is the quin-
tessential selection for Gala Honoree; and
WHEREAS, It is the practice of this Legislative Body that those who
enhance the quality of life in their community and have shown a long and
sustained commitment to the maintenance of high standards in their
profession, certainly have earned the recognition and applause of all
the citizens of this great Empire State; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend Doris Kearns Goodwin upon the occasion of her designation for
special recognition as a 2013 Gala Honoree by the Rockville Centre
Education Foundation; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Doris Kearns Goodwin.
