CAPITOL CONFIDENTIAL: BALL’S BULL
by Rick Karlin
He’s cast himself as an arch-conservative and defender of gun owner rights but has staunchly opposed hydrofracking and now Hudson Valley Senator Greg Ball is going after industrial agriculture, complete with a You Tube video of a bull he apparently rescued. Details of the animal’s history are sparse but toward the end, Ball, a Republican, denounces large-scale agribusiness with its use of chemicals, hormones and, critics say, poor treatment of livestock. So far, he notes, “Vegan” is turning out to draw the most votes in the senators’s Facebook contest to name the animal.
Senator Greg Ball (R, C – Patterson) launched a contest on his Facebook Fan Page asking fans to help name his bull. The name suggestion with the most “LIKES” will have the honor of naming the bull, which Greg rescued over the summer.
“This bull was malnourished, dehydrated and on death’s door when I found him in a nearby field. He has made it through an awful lot and has a great personality.” Ball said. “When I found this little guy, I made it my mission to nurse him back to health and thank God he made it through. He is strong and determined and well on his way to being a beautiful 2,000 pound bull one day!”
Video footage of Senator Ball bottle-feeding and scratching the bull can be found in his new YouTube video ”Senator Greg Ball On The Farm”.
“You don’t know where your food is coming from! It could come from Mexico, or it could come from a factory farm in Idaho,” Ball said. “The animals are raised inhumanely, and they don’t have a good life. They’re pumping them full of hormones and steroids. We must work to promote local, sustainable agriculture and provide new avenues for locally grown produce and meats.”
The “Name Senator Ball’s Bull” contest goes until January 31, 2012. At that time, a winner will be announced on his Facebook Fan Page wall. Already, entries are pouring in and the name leading the votes is “Vegan”. (ARTICLE)
