February is American Heart Month

Dear Constituents:February is American Heart Month!  It is a time to examine our health, eating habits, and fitness routines to determine how we can live longer and healthier lives.  During these times of economic hardship, health concerns may seem like a long-term issue during a short-term crisis, but I encourage everyone to take a moment to evaluate his or her lifestyle to improve health as winter enters its final weeks.    We’ve all heard the advice before, but since it pertains to health, the most precious of commodities, it bears repeating: if we eat right, get enough exercise, and cut back on or eliminate dangerous habits like smoking, we can enjoy better health.

P.S. 234 Elementary School Gym Repaired

The Queens Gazette article announces that the P.S. 234 School Gym, which has been closed since September due to flood damage, was finally repaired as a result of the efforts made by parents and elected officials.

Following a joint effort by Councilmember Peter F. Vallone Jr. and state Senator Michael Gianaris, the gymnasium at the Astoria Elementary School, P.S. 234, which suffered substantial flood damage, has been repaired and is now in use.

Dems: Senate GOP Bowdlerized Women's Health Resolution

Krueger noted that most of the Senate Republicans have already endorsed Mitt Romney for president, and suggested that the effort to squelch Stavisky’s resolution was a miniature version of assaults on reproduction rights on the federal level. “This is the beginning of their little national Planned Parenthood moment, so to speak,” she said.

GOP Silencing Abortion Talk

Democrats said a resolution submitted late last week by Queens Sen. Toby Ann Stavisky seeking to proclaim next week “Reproductive Rights and Justice Week” was scrubbed by Senate Majority Leader Dean Skelos' office to take out any mention of abortion, family planning and reproductive rights.

Instead, the GOP offered a re-written resolution that proclaimed it "Women's Health Week."

"They took my resolution, censored it, and gave us a sanitized version," Stavisky said at a press conference with fellow Democratic Senators Liz Krueger of Manhattan and Andrea Stewart-Cousins of Yonkers.

Gianaris Announces Legislation Expanding Good Samaritan Laws
