Senator Lanza To Introduce Bill Ensuring Only Citizens And Legal Residents Receive NYS Drivers License

Today, Senator Andrew Lanza (R-Staten Island) announced he would introduce legislation to make sure only citizens of the United States and legal residents receive a valid New York State Drivers License issued by the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles.

“This bill is a necessary measure to stop an ill-advised order from Governor Spitzer that could jeopardize the safety and security of New Yorkers,” said Senator Lanza. The legislation would require a social security number or proof of authorized presence in the United States to obtain a New York State drivers license.

“Once again, the Governor has shown his contempt for the Legislature by making a decision behind closed doors and in secret,” Senator Lanza added.

By advancing this proposal, the Governor has arrogantly and cavalierly dismissed legitimate security concerns raised by leading anti-terrorism experts, and has made it easier for illegal aliens to use their newly-aquired driver’s licenses to gain access to sensitive buildings and sensitive documents that could be used to harm New Yorkers.

The 9/11 Commission and others have said that providing driver’s licenses to illegal aliens is a a recipe for disaster, and the vast majority of States do not allow illegal aliens to obtain driver’s licenses. New York must ensure that a driver’s license remains the most important document the government issues to establish one’s identity. The Governor’s proposal will water down the value of a NY driver’s license across the country, and make it more difficult for legal, law-abiding New Yorkers to establish or confirm their identity.

The 9/11 hijackers obtained driver’s licenses in other states that they used to rent cars, obtain housing, open bank accounts, and board planes. At least six hijackers presented State-issued IDs to airline employees on the morning of 9/11. The Governor’s proposal leaves New York vulnerable to potential terrorists.

While there are major security concerns associated with the Governor’s new policy, New Yorkers should also be concerned that his directive will lead to rampant voter fraud as illegal aliens will be placed on the rolls through the Department of Motor Vehicles so they can participate in our democratic elections.

The Governor’s proposal is a thinly-veiled attempt to load up the voting rolls with hundreds of thousands of illegal aliens who can exert their influence over our local elections because it suits his political purposes,” said Senator Lanza.

“Governor Spitzer’s new, ill-advised policy will open the flood gates and allow increased instances of fraudulent issuances of licenses throughout the State. I am strongly opposed to the Governor’s policy and will work with my Senate and Assembly colleagues to pass my legislation that will increase security and provide the necessary safeguards when it comes to obtaining a driver’s license in New York State,” said Senator Lanza.
