Serrano Named Senate Minority Policy Chair

28th Senate District

New York, January 12, 2007 – State Senator José M. Serrano (D-Manhattan/Bronx) was selected this week to join the Democratic Senate leadership.

In his new post as Policy Chair, Serrano will assist the minority leader, Senator Malcolm Smith (D-Queens) in designing the conference agenda for the forthcoming legislative session.

Serrano will also act as a liaison between the Senate Democrats and federal elected officials and agencies.

Serrano previously served in the New York City Council, where he chaired the Committee on Cultural Affairs. In 2004, he ran on a reform platform to defeat a long-time incumbent in the 28th Senatorial District.

The leadership position provides him a greater opportunity to put forth his progressive agenda, one that has centered on affordable housing and healthcare, environmental protection and employing the arts as an economic engine for New York.
