Statement By Senate Democratic Leader Malcolm A. Smith In Response To The State Commission On Health Care Facilities In The 21st Century

Clearly, we have a broken health care system desperately in need of reform and revitalization and the Commission’s recommendations ought to be carefully considered as we head down the road towards restructuring our health care network and recovering the costs of inefficiencies. However, my main concern is that the recommendations for closures and reconfigurations are equitable across all regions of the state and carefully take into account the needs of all impacted communities.

These recommendations should be considered an initial step towards statewide reform and present us with an opportunity to make our health care system more responsive to our communities and less costly, in part by working with the impacted local communities to develop alternatives that will offset the closures and ensure that we provide the best possible health care coverage to all our communities, particular those already underserved.”
