Carmel Veteran Inducted Into Senator Greg Ball’s 2nd Annual Veterans’ Hall of Fame

Brewster, N.Y. – (3/2/13) – Over two dozen veterans from throughout the Hudson Valley were honored at Senator Greg Ball (R,C,I - Patterson) 2nd Annual Veterans’ Hall of Fame Ceremony. Among them, was Joseph F. Toleno from the Town of Carmel.

The Veterans’ Hall of Fame was created by Senator Ball, and designed to honor outstanding veterans throughout the 40th Senate District. Each veteran that was honored will also be individually featured on a traveling wall that will tour local municipalities throughout the 40th district.

“I am excited to induct this 2nd class of heroes into our Veterans’ Hall of Fame! These men and women have been hand-picked by their communities because they chose a path of courage, honor, integrity and bravery; a path that helped shape America as we know it, protecting our way of life and liberty,” said Senator Greg Ball. “America is not a great country because of its politicians, it’s a great country because of our veterans.”

Joseph F. Toleno is the Town of Carmel’s honoree for the 40th District Veterans’ Hall of Fame.

Joseph F. Toleno was born in Jersey City, New Jersey in October 1945. He served in the United States Army from December 6, 1962 to September 27, 1965, reaching the rank of Specialist 4.

During his service, Joseph F. Toleno was part of the 101st Airborne Division, and earned the Air Medal for Valor while in Vietnam. He also received the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, the Parachute Badge, the Vietnam Cross of Gallantry, the Army Medal of Accommodation, the New York State Conspicuous Service Cross, the Marksman Medal with Rifle M-1 Bar, and the Expert Medal with M-60 MG Bar.

Joseph F. Toleno served for two years as  Commander of American Legion Post 1080, for two years as Putnam County Commander of the American Legion, as Chairman of the Lasdon Park Vietnam Memorial, as a member of the American Legion Mahopac High School Scholarship Committee, President and Founder of the Martha Raye Chapter 541 of the Vietnam Veterans of America, spearheaded the Joplin, Missouri Flood Relief Fund, and has participated in American Legion Baseball, Boy Scouts of America, American Legion Boys State Venture Crew, and the Junior Shooting Team, and has earned the 9th District Legionnaire of the Year in 2012 for his volunteer and civic commitments to the community.

Joseph F. Toleno retired from the Westchester Local 11, the Carpenter’s Union.
