The weatherman failed to cooperate but that did not deter members of the Brewster High School Cross Country team from thanking State Senator Greg Ball for his assistance that resulted in the construction of a new track.

The senator stopped by at the school last Thursday morning for what was planned as a tour of the new facility and a “quick run.”

However, shortly after he arrived, the skies darkened and heavy rain pelted the area.

Ball decided to meet with the young athletes in a hall overlooking the track.

“Putnam County pays some of the highest taxes in the state and while I might be a limited government guy, I do believe that it is critical we fight for our fair share,” he said.

Ball added that “lessons learned on the athletic field are just as important as those learned in the classroom. Supporting athletic programs is critical.”

Ball garnered a $100,000 grant last year which along with other funding from the Brewster Sports Foundation and Brewster Board of Education enabled the district to resurface and construct a competitive track allowing the district for the first time in many years to host home meets starting this spring.

BHS Principal Joseph Castagnola thanked the senator for being “there for our kids. Greg Ball’s understanding of the need for partnerships between schools and governmental officials is forward thinking and most rewarding.” (ARTICLE)
