Croton-On-Hudson, Gunners Mate 3rd Class Joseph Turturro
Gunners Mate 3rd Class / U.S. Navy Joseph Turturro enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1943, and served on the U.S.S. Sagittarius, shooting down Kamikazes in WWII. The U.S.S. Sagittarius was employed in laying anti-submarine nets in the harbor waters of Tinian, Saipan and Okinawa. On April 18, 1945, within hours of arrival at Hagushi, Turturro came under attack, and the U.S.S. Sagittarius shot down its first Kamikaze. Gunners Mate 3rd Class Joseph Turturro was awarded many medals, including the Navy Commendation medal for outstanding service.
