(04/18/12) SOMERS - Some parents in Somers are traveling to Albany this morning to fight for school bus rights for their kids.

A group of about 100 concerned parents is gathering at Kennedy Catholic High School before heading to the state capitol to fight against reducing the number of miles public schools are required to bus non-public school students.

Currently, state law requires public schools to bus any student who attends a private, religious or other school up to 15 miles out of the district. Public schools are now in the process of reducing that down to 5 miles out of the district in an effort to save money.

The group is going to appeal to Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s Mandate Relief Council and ask them to reconsider the budget cuts. The council is an 11-member board that reviews the financial burdens on local governments and school districts. (ARTICLE)
