OFFICIAL STATEMENT: SENATOR BALL CONCERNED WITH COMMUNICATIONS FAILURES AND SLOW RESPONSE TIMES FOLLOWING HURRICANE IRENE

 

    "I must commend first responders, community leaders, volunteers and law enforcement personnel for working together to bring dignity and order in the wake of this hard-hitting storm. Still, thousands of residents are without water and power, and therefore, without the basic opportunity to take care of their homes and families in dignity.

    Two more weeks of this hardship is simply ridiculous. One more week of this would be a horror to the families affected. Even one more day of inaction is an indicator and an indictment on New York's underlying preparedness for a major natural or manmade disaster.

    NYSEG must begin to more immediately respond to abandoned customers, struggling for basic answers and information. A suggestion of two weeks without service is unacceptable and begs for an independent hearing and investigation into New York's apparent inability to recover and respond.

    We have seniors, families and I even know of single moms with special needs children who are left abandoned. We have small businesses already struggling in this horrible economy, many holding on by a thread even before the storm, left incapable of conducting business. We even have healthcare providers left in the dark, and patients left untreated.

    At a minimum, NYSEG must begin to respond immediately to abandoned customers, struggling for basic answers and information."
