Senate Approves Members To Key Substance Abuse And Health Boards

 

The New York State Senate confirmed appointees to key boards today, including members to the Advisory Council on Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services, the New York Convention Center Operating Corporation, Visitors of the Capital District Developmental Disabilities Services Office, Visitors of the Hudson River Psychiatric Center, Visitors of the Staten Island Developmental Disabilities Services Office and Visitors of the Sunmount Developmental Disabilities Services Office.

 

Carlos Blanco, MD (New York, NY)

Member, Advisory Council on Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services

Carlos Blanco is currently an Associate Professor of Clinical Psychiatry at Columbia University, a position he has held since 2006.  Dr. Blanco also holds the position of Research Psychiatrist II for the New York State Psychiatric Institute.  Dr. Blanco earned a MD and a PhD from the Universidad Autonoma de Madrid.  He earned a MS from the New School University in New York in 1996 and another MS from Columbia University in New York in 2004.  His term limit as member will expire on June 2, 2012.

 

Sharon Gillette (Plattsburgh, NY)

Member, Advisory Council on Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services

Sharon Gillette presently serves as the Director of Community Services, Clinton County Community Services Board.  Ms. Gillette has worked at St. Mary’s Hospital Comprehensive Mental Health and Alcoholism Center as both a counselor and eventually Director of Alcoholism Services.  She was also the Director of Community Education for the NYS Council on Alcoholism & Other Substances as well as the Assistant Director/Supervisor ATC Clinical Services at the St. Lawrence Addiction Treatment Center.  Ms. Gillette earned a BS from New Hampshire College and a MS from Antioch New England graduate School.  Her appointment expires on June 2, 2011.

 

William Magwood (Newburgh, NY)

Member, Advisory Council on Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services

Since 1995, Mr. Magwood has served as Vice-President of Operations and Finance for Renaissance Project Inc., Prior to his current position, he was Executive Director, NYS Governor’s Statewide Anti-Drug Abuse Council for the Office of the Lieutenant Governor.  Mr. Magwood earned a MS from the New School University, Graduate School of Management & Urban Policy.  His term limit as Member expires on June 6, 2012.

 

Robert Azeke (New York, NY)

Director, New York Convention Center Operating Corporation

In 2004, Mr. Azeke founded Sunday Group after decades of investment banking and private equity experience on Wall Street.  Prior to founding the Sunday Group, Mr. Azeke was a principal at Compass Partners LLC, a $1 billion private equity and boutique advisory firm.  Mr. Azeke earned an MBA from Harvard University and a BA from the University of North Carolina.  The term for this appointment expires on June 13, 2012.

 

Patricia Wright (Waterford, NY)

Member, Board of Visitors of the Capital District Developmental Disabilities Services Office

Ms. Wright currently serves as District Claims Manager for the NYS Compensation Board where she has worked since 1979.  Ms. Wright earned her degree Summa Cum Laude from the State University College at Oswego.  The appointment for Member of the Board of Visitors of the Capital District Developmental Disabilities Services Office expires December 31, 2012.

 

Dean Poorman (Poughkeepsie, NY)

Member, Board of Visitors of the Hudson River Psychiatric Center

Dean Poorman is currently in private practice providing mental health and substance abuse services to residences in the Poughkeepsie, New York area.  Mr. Poorman has had over two decades of experience in the field of mental health and substance abuse services.  He earned a BA from Haverford College in Pennsylvania, a MSW from Hunter College in New York City, as well as Post Masters Administration courses from Hunter College Graduate School of Social Work.  The term limit for this appointment expires December 31, 2012.

 

Edward Checkett (Staten Island, NY)

Member, Board of Visitors of the Staten Island Developmental Disabilities Services Office

Since 1997, Mr. Checkett has served as a Sign Language Interpreter at the Seton Foundation for Learning as well as an Adjunct Professor at Medgar Evers College of the City of New York.   In 1983, he founded the Seton Foundation for Learning in Staten Island and remains a member of the Board of Directors. Mr. Checkett earned a BS and 60 Post Graduate credits from New York University.  The term limit for this appointment expires on December 31, 2012.

 

Gilbert Duken (Plattsburgh, NY)

Member, Board of Visitors of the Sunmount Developmental Disabilities Services Office

Prior to his retirement in 1996, Mr. Duken served as an Administrative Consultant as well as Acting Superintendent of Schools for the Plattsburgh City School District.  Mr. Duken earned a BS and a MS in Education from State University College at Plattsburgh, New York.  He earned a CAS (Certificate of Advanced Study) in Educational Administration from State University College at Plattsburgh.  The term limit for this appointment expires on December 31, 2012.
