SENATOR BALL APPLAUDS MAYOR BLOOMBERG’S COMMONSENSE ON TAPPAN ZEE BRIDGE

Ball continues push for P3 for Transit Portion of TZ Bridge

Albany, N.Y. – (4/16/13) –Senator Greg Ball (R,C,I-Patterson) saluted Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s recent comments on the need for mass transit on the Tappan Zee Bridge project.

Mayor Bloomberg, on his weekly radio show, criticized Governor Cuomo’s decision not to include mass transit in the Tappan Zee Bridge design. Cuomo is instead moving forward with a ‘transit capable’ bridge design; similar to the ‘transit capable’ design of The George Washington Bridge, of which never added the transit portion.

“Not to put mass transit on the bridge is a terrible mistake,” said Bloomberg. “Mass transit is our future.”

“I applaud Mayor Bloomberg for his recent comments and insight on the Tappan Zee Bridge. As the Mayor said, mass transit is our future and we cannot consistently leverage debt based financing or squeeze taxpayers. This bridge is too big and too expensive to get wrong,” said Senator Greg Ball. “Dozens of states all across America are utilizing public private partnerships (P3) to successfully finance and complete large scale public works projects. Our transportation infrastructure in New York is in dire need of modernization, starting with the Tappan Zee Bridge. I urge Governor Cuomo and my fellow elected officials to work with me to ensure the new bridge is mass transit ready. We can finance this through P3 legislation, at no additional cost to taxpayers or additional long term bonding debt, and we can do it this year!”

Senator Ball recently completed an economic development tour of Texas, a state that utilizes P3. During Senator Ball’s trip he met with Timothy Merriweather of Longbow Partners. Merriweather played a key role in advocating for the construction and passage of Texas Senate Bill 1048 – The Public and Private Facilities and Infrastructure Act.

“Here in Texas we have been able to utilize public private partnerships to build and maintain critical infrastructure for our growing state,” said Merriweather. “I salute Senator Ball for his leadership in working to bring similar P3 legislation to New York State.”
