SENATOR BALL, COUNCILMAN MURPHY DEMAND CHILD SAFETY ZONE LEGISLATION

Brewster, N.Y. – (10/27/10) – Senator Greg Ball (R, C – Patterson) today joined Yorktown Councilman Dr. Terrence Murphy for a news conference in Yorktown Heights, N.Y. where they demanded that legislation be introduced and passed for the protection of our children. Ball and Murphy are calling on officials in Westchester County to enact Child Safety Zone legislation, which prohibits convicted sexual predators from living within 1,000 feet of any school, playground, school bus stop, or other areas where children congregate.

As an Assemblyman, Ball was a member of the Assembly Sex Offender Watch Task Force, which successfully passed and enacted Child Safety Zone laws in Putnam County. Ball also sponsored Child Safety Zone legislation (A7948) in the Assembly to create uniform standards across New York to protect children from dangerous sexual predators.

“Those predators that prey upon our children are the lowest of all. Unfortunately, most victims know their predators personally, and most of the time, we must look within our own four walls to best protect our children. That said, it’s hard to believe that Putnam County has Child Safety Zone laws in place, yet one mile away in Westchester County, they have not moved forward at all,” said Senator Greg Ball.

Dr. Terrence Murphy, President of Keeping Westchester Safe said, “We need to take all measures to improve the future of our kids here in Westchester County. We need to make this county more affordable and put the necessary measures in place to protect our children from dangerous sexual predators. I look forward to my continued work with Senator Ball, Assemblyman Katz, and Assemblyman Castelli on this issue and will continue this fight for all of Westchester County.”
