Senator Ball Honors NY’s Heroes

Putnam County veteran received prestigious honor at “Hall of Fame” event

Albany, N.Y. – (06/14/11) – Senator Greg Ball (R, C – Patterson), Chairman of the Veterans, Homeland Security and Military Affairs Committee, is honoring New York’s heroes at the annual New York State Senate Veteran’s Hall of Fame event. Chairman Ball is proud to announce that a Putnam County resident and highly decorated Vietnam combat veteran, Karl R. Rohde, is amongst the group of brave men and women who is being recognized.

“Karl is a true patriot,” said Chairman Ball. “He embodies all of the principals of a Hall of Famer.  I could not be more proud to nominate Karl for this prestigious honor and it is my pleasure to have someone like him in my district and community,” added Chairman Ball.

Karl was honorably discharged from the United States Army. He is a dedicated servant of his community and a resident of Kent, N.Y. For his service to our nation, Karl has received the Silver Star, Combat Infantry Badge, M-16 Expert Rifleman Award, Army Commendation Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal, Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry and New York State Conspicuous Service Cross.

The New York State Senate Veterans’ Hall of Fame was created to honor and recognize outstanding veterans from the Empire State who have distinguished themselves both in military and civilian life. Their meritorious service to our nation deserves the special recognition that only a Hall of Fame can provide, as a fitting expression of our gratitude and admiration.

“It is truly humbling to receive this honor,” said Karl R. Rohde. “One does not go off to war to win awards; one goes off to war because serving your country is the right thing to do. Equally, one does not work for his fellow veterans and community for awards, one does it because it is the right thing to do as an American citizen. Many good people helped me along the way. My comrades in arms, my parents, my wife and my children. I thank them all and offer a heartfelt thanks to Senator Ball for nominating me for this honor,” added Rohde.

“It has been my honor to get to know Karl Rohde during the last several years,” said Senator Ball’s Director of Government and Veterans Affairs MaryEllen Odell. “He is a true patriot, loving husband and father, and a man of integrity. He is a teacher of American history not only in the classroom, but in the community as well. Karl reminds us when we need to be reminded that this nation is free for 5 reasons. The Army, Navy, Airforce, Marines, and Coast Guard.  He leads by example,” added Odell.
