SENATOR BALL PLEDGES TO SECURE FUNDING FOR YORKTOWN SENIOR CENTER DURING HOLIDAY CELEBRATION
Brewster, N.Y. – (12/26/2011) –The Yorktown senior community got more than a visit from Senator Greg Ball (R, C-Patterson) at their annual holiday celebration— they got a commitment from Senator Ball that he will work to secure at least $100,000 in funding, which they never received from the Dormitory Authority for ongoing renovations to the Yorktown Senior Center.
The center offers nutrition programs, home meals, grocery shopping, a wellness program, medical transportation and a multitude of classes for the seniors who walk through its doors.
“This is the hub of senior life here in Yorktown and it is vital to the wellbeing of our seniors that they have a safe, happy place to go every day,” said Senator Ball. “Without the senior center, these folks would have to fend for themselves when it comes to getting the care they need to stay healthy this holiday season and throughout the year.”
During his visit, Senator Ball had the opportunity to tour the construction site where a new addition is currently being built. Mary DeSilva, the Director of Senior Services, said that she and the seniors are grateful that Ball is fighting for this funding they have been waiting on for over 3 years.
“It’s important to have a center that looks beautiful and cheery,” DeSilva explained. “It makes the seniors enjoy coming to the center. Many of these seniors come here 5 days a week, and it’s like their second home— their home away from home.”
Senator Ball is also pushing to get an additional $150,000 from the Dormitory Authority for additional renovations to the center’s bathrooms and hallways.
