Brewster, N.Y. – 7/19/2013 – Last year Senator Greg Ball (R, C, I – Patterson) assembled a Student Advisory Council of students from High Schools across the 40th Senate District.

Senator Ball is now currently seeking additional highly motivated and determined students to join his advisory council. If you are interested in joining please contact Suzi McDonough at (845) 279-3773 or mcdonoug@nysenate.gov.

The Student Advisory Council was put in place by Senator Ball to work on issues that are important to students. Last year, the council focused on combating bullying, texting while driving, social media privacy and minimum wage increases. Students also traveled to Albany and had the ability to introduce, debate and vote on legislation on the New York State Senate floor.

“When I was a student I wanted to get involved but felt my elected officials were unapproachable,” said Senator Greg Ball. “I really wanted to change that perception once elected. It’s so important that we encourage our youth to get active and involved in our communities.”

“This is a wonderful opportunity for kids throughout Peekskill to get a firsthand experience of how state government works,” said Peekskill City School District Superintendent Jim Willis. “I salute Senator Ball for establishing this Student Advisory Council and encourage all our students to get involved.”

Senator Ball’s Student Advisory Council will also elect a new Co-Chair after Brewster High School graduate Drew Podgorski leaves this fall to attend Macaulay Honors College at CUNY.

“Serving on Senator Ball’s Student Advisory Council has been a great honor. Last year, the mock senate session was a huge success among both the students who participated and the teachers who witnessed it,” said co-chair of the Student Advisory Council Drew Podgorski. “I encourage any student that would like to get involved and learn how government works to join the advisory council. This has been a great experience and I look forward to coming back to visit all the great friends I have made.”
