SENATOR FUSCHILLO REQUESTS LIRR TO PROVIDE SCHEDULE FOR TRACK DEBRIS CLEAN UP

Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. (R-Merrick) today requested the LIRR to provide a schedule of when it will clean up the blighted areas along its tracks which are littered with debris.

Newsday recently reported that the LIRR has left piles of debris, in some cases several feet high, on the right of way area running along their tracks. A number of different areas throughout the system are littered with these trash heaps that contain old railroad ties, pieces of rail, plastic tubing, and other types of garbage. The debris is not just an eyesore for the affected communities and LIRR passengers; LIRR officials acknowledged that some workers suffered debris-related injuries while walking along the tracks.

LIRR officials have announced that they will be cleaning up the most affected areas by the end of the year. However, they have not yet announced a schedule on when cleanups will take place.

“The LIRR should not be using its right of way area as a garbage pail. LIRR officials rightly noted that they have a responsibility to their riders and the residents of the surrounding communities to clean up their mess. The LIRR should provide a schedule of when these clean ups will take place, as well as information about the corrective actions they are taking to prevent this from happening again in the future,” said Senator Fuschillo, Chairman of the Senate’s Transportation Committee.
