SENATOR GREG BALL NOMINATES MAHOPAC HS STUDENT FOR FULL RIDE TO SUNY MARITIME

Brewster, N.Y. – 01/22/2014 – Senator Greg Ball (R, C, I – Patterson), Chairman of the Senate Veterans, Homeland Security and Military Affairs Committee, has announced that he has nominated Luke Hands of Mahopac High School to receive a four-year, full tuition scholarship to attend SUNY Maritime.
“It is my honor to ensure that Luke received a legislative scholarship to attend SUNY Maritime. SUNY Maritime is a premier center for higher education and recognized around the world as a leader in maritime related higher education,” said Senator Greg Ball. “Each state legislator is entitled to name a limited number of students to attend SUNY Maritime for a full ride. I encourage qualified and interested students, like Luke, to look at this institution and apply for legislative scholarship opportunities in the future. I wish Luke the best of luck at school and I am very excited to see the wonderful things he will accomplish.”
Luke Hands is currently a very active Senior at Mahopac High School. Luke plays lacrosse and runs both winter track and fall cross country, he is also a part of the Spanish club. Outside of school he has volunteered his time at Sycamore Park and also Putnam Hospital Center. In the Fall, Luke plans to study mechanical engineering at SUNY Maritime College.
In recognition of the Maritime College’s unique programs of study and proven 100% career placement rate, the New York State Legislature has approved the Cadet Appointment Program (CAP) at Maritime College whereby elected officials can nominate qualified New York State residents from across the state to attend the College and receive a four-year, full tuition scholarship for their undergraduate studies.
The State Legislature is proud of this commitment to the unique adventure that is a Maritime College education, an adventure that includes world travel and hands-on experience that is in demand. Through the Cadet Appointment Program, every four years each Senator may nominate 2 students in his/her district, each Member of the Assembly may nominate 1 student in his/her district and the Governor, Majority Leader of the Senate and Speaker of the Assembly may nominate 5 students each.
