Senator Stavisky writes letter to Mayor Bloomberg criticizing plan to lay off teachers while spending up to $5 million to recruit new ones

This week the news has been full of Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s plan to cut as many as 6,700 teachers in an effort to plug a $5 billion budget deficit. This will have an undeniable effect on our city’s children and the quality of the education they receive, and their prospects for a brighter future.

Then the Daily News printed a story about the Department of Education seeking approval for a $5 million per year contract to recruit new teachers

Sen. Toby Ann Stavisky wrote Mayor Bloomberg a letter asking that he use the $5 million to offset teacher layoffs.  If the city cannot afford its current teachers, how can it pay to recruit new ones?
