Statement on the Expulsion of Senator Monserrate
“Yesterday’s vote to expel Senator Hiram Monserrate followed the recommendations of the Senate Select Committee, which investigated the facts and circumstances surrounding Senator Monserrate’s conduct. The Select Committee determined that he engaged in domestic violence and failed to cooperate in any way with the work of the Select Committee.
Over the last decade, the Senate passed over 100 pieces of legislation to provide law enforcement officials and members of the judiciary with severe penalties to deter acts of domestic violence and punish those who commit them.
Because Senator Monserrate failed to cooperate with the Senate’s investigation and accept responsibility for his actions and his actions directly conflict with New York’s well-established Zero Tolerance Policy for domestic violence matters, I voted to expel Senator Monserrate from the New York State Senate.”
