Statement on Medicaid petition drive

State Senator Michael H. Ranzenhofer has issued the following statement in support of the Medicaid petition drive promoted by the Genesee County Legislature:

“I applaud each and every member of the Genesee County Legislature for launching a petition drive, urging the State to take over the county’s share of Medicaid.  Their leadership on this issue is to be commended.  As a former county legislator for many years, I understand how Medicaid costs burden county budgets.

For too long, the State of New York has mandated counties pay for Medicaid - without any local input on which services to offer and how to provide them- then forced county governments to foot part of the bill.  Transferring the local share of Medicaid costs will deliver significant cost savings to counties and force the state to think twice about the services it provides through its Cadillac Medicaid program. That is why I have offered my strong support for legislation, Senate Bill 5889-B, to transfer the county’s entire share of Medicaid costs to the State.

As your representative, serving in the State Senate for the last three years, I have noticed that the best ideas to change Albany’s ways aren’t initiated within the walls of the State Capitol; they come from ordinary citizens with extraordinary ideas.  I encourage all of the citizens of Genesee County to consider signing the petition so their voice can be heard loud and clear in Albany.”
