Statement From Senate Majority Conference Leader John L. Sampson On New York Reaching Race To The Top Finals
New York is back where it belongs in the Race to the Top. Today, we have moved one step closer to improving all of New York’s schools, so all of New York’s children have the world class education they deserve.”
By passing legislation to raise the charter cap, reform charter schools, improve teacher evaluation, and invest in tracking educational outcomes, the Senate Democratic Majority helped give New York the competitive advantage it needed to become a finalist in the Race to the Top.
This is a shining example of what the Senate Democratic Majority can accomplish for the State of New York.
I applaud the extraordinary leadership of Chancellor Tisch and Commissioner Steiner in crafting New York’s application for Race to the Top funding.
I also want to thank Governor Paterson, Speaker Silver, Mayor Bloomberg, Chancellor Klein, Senate Education Chair Suzi Oppenheimer, Assembly Education Chair Cathy Nolan and our partners in the education community, including NYSUT, UFT, and the charter movement for working together to deliver for New York’s children. And, I would like to extend a special thank you to U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan for his commitment to creating an environment in which improving educational outcomes has become the focus of a national conversation.
