Woman of Distinction From The Village of Sleepy Hollow, Sophie Phillips.

 

    Nominated by Westchester Medical Center. Ms. Phillips’ has been nominated by Westchester Medical Center for the compassion, kindness and serenity she brings to the patients in the Cancer Ward of Westchester Medical Center. When her best friend was diagnosed at age 12 with ovarian cancer, Ms. Phillips visited the hospital every day, realizing the passion she had for working with and helping others who are in the hospital setting. Ms. Phillips is a Unit Based Action Volunteer at Westchester Medical Center, where she visits and advocates for patients. Ms. Phillips is also a part of the Surgical Liaison team, and is responsible for interfacing between surgical staff and waiting family members. From a young age, Ms. Phillips’ has dedicated her time to others, even while struggling with her own obstacles. At the age of two, Ms. Phillips’ parents learned she had lost hearing in both ears. With the support of her mother’s efforts, Ms. Phillips worked on her auditory process and speech, and not only did she keep up with her classmates, she excelled in academics, sports and art. Ms. Phillips served as President of her High School Honor Society, Captain of the Swim Team and ran Varsity Winter & Spring Track. Ms. Phillips is a student at the Rochester Institute of Technology, where she is the recipient of the Presidential Scholarship, the Merit Scholarship, and the RIT Academic Scholarship. She has recently finished her first year of college, making the Dean’s List both semesters.
