Senator Montgomery Announces NYSABPRL's 41st Annual Legislative Conference Workshop & Event Schedule

The 41st Annual Legislative Conference of the NYS Association of Black and Puerto Rican Legislators will convene on Friday, February 17th and conclude on Sunday, February 19th, 2012. The theme of this year’s conference is “Open Doors to Employment, Opens Doors to Empowerment."

SENATE PASSES “NEW YORK COMPREHENSIVE INFORMATION SYSTEM ACT”

State Senator John A. DeFrancisco announced that his bill (S3297) passed the New York Senate. The bill would improve access to information across the State.

Access to information is vital to creating an environment conducive to learning and innovation. Under this legislation, the New York State Library would be authorized to coordinate the purchase of electronic databases and other information resources for state agencies, library systems, and other governmental entities.

“More Central New Yorkers are using their local libraries to research employment opportunities and learn new skills. This bill would allow libraries to lower their overheard, stretch their resources, and offer patrons more for less,” said Senator DeFrancisco.

Senator Martins Introduces the Governor For Budget Presentation at Molloy College

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo traveled to Molloy College to outline his 2012-13 Executive Budget and Reform Plan, which expands on the historic reforms enacted last year to continue building a New New York. As a result of the tough decisions and bipartisan cooperation of the past year, the State is able to close the current deficit without broad cuts, new taxes, fees or gimmicks. In addition, the Governor's Executive Budget proposes major reforms to reduce the cost of government for taxpayers, implements accountability in our schools to put students first, and puts the State in a position to leverage billions of dollars in private sector investment to grow the economy and create jobs.

Seward Starts Fine Tuning State Budget

ONEONTA, 02/02/12 -- State Senator James L. Seward (R/C/I – Oneonta) has been named to two key senate budget sub-committees which will review the governor’s budget proposal and offer recommendations for modifications.  Senator Seward will serve on the health sub-committee and the education sub-committee.

Regarding his health subcommittee assignment Senator Seward said:

“A number of important issues are included under the health heading – a state takeover of Medicaid, creation of a health insurance exchange, and funding for vital public health programs,” said Senator Seward.  “Ensuring the public’s needs are met while keeping state spending in check will be a primary focus.”

LARKIN NAMED TO SENATE BUDGET SUBCOMMITTEES

Work Begins Immediately To Ensure an On-Time Budget

Senator Bill Larkin (R-C, Cornwall-on-Hudson) announced that he has been asked to serve on both the Health and Mental Hygiene Budget Subcommittees in the Senate.  These subcommittees review the Governor’s budget proposals and report to the full Conference with recommendations on key issues in those areas. 

“This is a tremendous honor for me,” said Larkin.  “The areas of Health and Mental Hygiene are important to my constituents and I feel it’s imperative to have their voices heard during budget negotiations.  I am anxious to start our in-depth review of the budget language and look forward to working with Governor to achieve an on-time budget,” said Larkin.
